Hillcrest High School Broadcast Journalism II Syllabus/1997-98/Mr. Davis Broadcast Journalism II is a production class which builds on skills mastered in Broadcast Journalism I. Students in Broadcast Journalism II make up the staff of HTV Magazine , the school's cable access program, and the Our Turn report for KY3. In addition, Broadcast Journalism II students have the opportunity to represent the school in a variety of community forums, local, state and national contests, and national journalism conventions. Students in Broadcast Journalism II have completed at least one semester of Broadcast Journalism I, and have shown advanced skills in television production and teamwork. Students must enroll in Broadcast Journalism II for the full year unless they have received special permission in advance from Mr. Davis to do otherwise. Major Instructional Goals of Broadcast Journalism II/Students will: --Produce on a regular basis programs for airing on local cable access and KY3 --Represent HHS and HTV Magazine at local community functions --Sharpen videography, editing, presentation, writing and research skills honed in Broadcast Journalism I --Produce at least one in-depth documentary or special edition for airing on cable and/or KY3 --Investigate a variety of Broadcast Journalism and communication careers and college degrees --Do internships as they are made available --Mentor Broadcast Journalism I students in production techniques --Participate in journalism conventions and/or contests Students are expected to be willing to: --Work before and after school, and occasionally on weekends to meet deadlines --Produce a number of live and live-to-tape programs from the HHS studio --Meet all HTV and KY3 deadlines for shows and packages --Take responsibility for their actions --Work as a team --Place a premium on accuracy --Help maintain the production studio --Be responsible for proper care and handling of the Broadcast Journalism equipment --Devote the weekend of September 26-27 to the Heritage Reunion production --Produce the Friday announcements each week Grades: Students will be graded on class participation, attitude, and meeting deadlines (50%) and on a final portfolio tape (50%) *Students who carelessly damage equipment may be removed from class. Responsibilities of the production staff: € Do the announcements twice a week € Produce variety/comedy shows for channel 25 each quarter € Produce the memories assembly (late may) € Do live sportscasts of hhs games on channel 25 (volleyball, girls b-ball) € Begin a concert series with area bands for channel 25 € Do in-house video projects € Do community video projects € Attend the spring journalism convention trip and do presentation (voluntary) € Produce half of the 1999 Buzz-A-Thon € Do production internships as they are available € Occasionally contribute to HTV Magazine € Produce the january edition of HTV Magazine € Produce the 1999 media awards banquet entertainment segments
